Stump Grinding in Dunedin, FL
We grind stumps, take down trees and clear storm debris for homeowners across Dunedin.

A stump left in a Dunedin yard keeps sending up shoots and draws termites, and it gets in the way every time you mow. We grind it below the soil line so you can put grass or a garden bed back over the spot. We also handle the tree work that tends to come before or after a stump.
Trees and yards in Dunedin
Dunedin has a lot of mature trees for a town its size. The older streets near downtown and along the water have live oaks and laurel oaks that were planted a long time ago. Many of the ranch-style neighbourhoods further inland have a mix of oaks, palms and fast-growing ornamentals. When one of those trees comes down, the stump stays behind, and it rarely sits still. An oak stump can keep sending up suckers for a long time after the tree is gone. Laurel oaks tend to rot from the centre as they age, and that rot is often why they get taken down in the first place.
Most of the soil here is sand, sometimes over a layer of shell or clay. On lower lots near the coast the water table can sit close to the surface. Sandy soil makes grinding easy in most yards, but it also lets roots spread wide and shallow. A big oak can leave surface roots running well out into the lawn, under the edge of a driveway or toward a pool deck. It helps to know that before you lay new sod, set pavers or dig a bed.
The heat and rain matter too. Through a Florida summer a stump stays damp, so termites, carpenter ants and fungus move in. It will break down on its own, but slowly, and in the meantime it is something to trip over and steer the mower around.
Grinding, removal or root work
Most homeowners just want the stump gone so they can plant over it. That is Stump Grinding. We grind the stump down below the soil line and leave a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. You can spread the chips as mulch or rake them back into the hole. Grinding does not pull out the whole root system. The roots left underground rot in place over the following years, which is normal and usually causes no trouble.
Stump Removal means digging out the root ball itself. It makes sense if you plan to pour a slab, build an addition or plant a new tree in the same spot, where leftover wood would get in the way. It is more work, and it leaves a bigger hole that needs backfilling and time to settle.
Root Grinding follows the surface roots out from the stump. Homeowners ask for it when a root is lifting the edge of a walkway, catching the mower blade or sitting where a new bed is planned. Some roots run too close to a foundation, a pipe or a slab to grind safely. If yours does, we will tell you and explain the options.
Palm stumps behave differently from oak stumps. A palm has a fibrous trunk and a mass of thin roots instead of a few thick ones, so the stump grinds into a stringy mulch and tends to break down faster. With Palm Tree Removal we take down the palm and can grind the stump on the same visit.
Tree work before and after the stump
Sometimes the stump is the last step of a bigger job. Tree Removal covers trees that are dead, leaning toward the house or rotting at the base. Dunedin has rules about removing certain trees, so check with the city before a healthy tree comes down. We can talk it through with you, but the permit decision belongs to the city.
Tree Trimming keeps limbs off the roof, out of the gutters and clear of the driveway. In a coastal town it is also a way to cut back weak or overextended limbs before storm season, when they are most likely to break. If a limb is touching a service line to the house, call the power company first.
Lot Clearing is for overgrown lots, back corners that have gone wild, or a property being readied for building. It usually combines brush removal, small tree removal and grinding the stumps that are left.
Storm Cleanup covers limbs, downed trees and the stumps that are left behind after a storm. We do this work during our regular hours. We do not offer after-hours or emergency service, so if a tree is on the house or a car, contact your insurer and the right emergency services first, and call us once the scene is safe.
What a visit looks like
We start by looking at the stump and the ground around it. We note the diameter, how high it stands, whether the wood is sound or rotten, and how the surface roots run. We also check access. Most backyards in Dunedin can be reached through a side gate, but a narrow gate, a fenced pool area or a steep slope changes which machine we bring and how long the job takes.
Before any grinding, underground utilities need to be marked. In Florida you call 811 a few days ahead and the utility companies flag their lines for free. Sprinkler lines and low-voltage landscape lighting are not marked that way, so walk us through where yours run, or flag the heads. Sprinkler lines in sandy soil are often shallow, and we would rather know where they are than find them.
On the day, we set up, grind the stump to the agreed depth, and rake the chips back into the hole or into a pile, whichever you prefer. Grinding throws chips, so we ask that pets, children and cars are kept well back while the machine runs. After that, you can rake the spot level, top it with soil and seed or sod it.
How to book in Dunedin
Call us at (727) 010-0002 or email info@stumpgrindingclearwater.com. If you can, send a photo of the stump with something next to it for scale, like a shoe or a tape measure, and a photo of the path from the street to the stump. That often lets us give you a clear idea of the job before we come out.
We are based in Clearwater, so Dunedin is close by. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed on Sunday. If you have more than one stump, or a stump plus some trimming or removal, mention it when you get in touch so we can quote it all on one visit.
