Stump Grinding in Safety Harbor, FL
We grind stumps, clear roots and take down trees for homeowners in Safety Harbor and the towns around it.

Safety Harbor has a lot of old trees, and old trees leave stumps behind when they come down. We grind them out, deal with the roots that come with them and haul away what is left. If you have a stump, a leaning tree or a yard full of storm debris, call us and we will come and look at it.
Trees and yards in Safety Harbor
Safety Harbor sits on the west shore of Old Tampa Bay, and much of the city is shaded by mature trees. Many of the streets around downtown and Main Street have older homes on lots that were planted decades ago. Big live oaks and laurel oaks stand next to driveways, sidewalks and foundations, and cabbage palms and other palms are common in front yards. Newer subdivisions further from the water tend to have smaller lots and younger trees, but they still have their share of stumps from clearing and from trees that did not take.
The soil here is mostly sand, and near the bay the water table can sit close to the surface. Roots in sandy, wet ground spread wide and shallow. That matters when a tree comes down, because the stump is usually only part of the problem. The roots running out toward a patio, a driveway or a lawn are often what you notice first.
What usually leaves a stump behind
Most stumps we see in the area come from one of a few causes. Laurel oaks are relatively short-lived and often decline as they age, so they get taken down before they fail. Summer thunderstorms and the wind that comes with tropical weather snap limbs and push over trees with weak root plates. Some trees are removed because they are too close to the house, the pool or the roofline. Others are cut by a previous owner who never had the stump ground.
A stump left in the ground does not just sit there. In our warm, wet climate it starts to rot, and rotting wood can draw termites and other insects toward the house. Some trees send up sprouts from the stump and roots for years. Stumps also get in the way of mowing and are easy to trip over once grass grows around them. If you are planning new sod, a garden bed or a fence line, the stump usually needs to go first.
Services we offer in Safety Harbor
Stump Grinding is the most common job we do. We grind the stump down below the soil surface so you can cover it with soil and plant grass or a bed over it. Stump Removal goes further and takes out the stump and the main root mass, which makes sense when you plan to build or pour something in that spot.
Root Grinding deals with the surface roots that spread out from a stump or a living tree. These are the roots that lift pavers, crack walkways and make a lawn bumpy. Tree Removal is for trees that are dead, dying, leaning toward the house or simply in the wrong place. Tree Trimming covers dead limbs, branches over the roof and clearance from wires and structures.
Lot Clearing is for overgrown parcels and back corners of yards that need brush, small trees and stumps taken out before work can start. Palm Tree Removal is its own kind of job, since palms are cut and handled differently from hardwoods and their stumps break down in a different way. Storm Cleanup covers fallen trees, broken limbs and debris after bad weather. We work during our regular hours and do not offer after-hours service, so storm calls are scheduled in the order they come in.
Grinding or full removal
For most yards, grinding is enough. It removes the visible stump and the top of the root crown, and the remaining wood breaks down underground over time. It is quicker, it disturbs less of the yard and it leaves you with a hole full of wood chips that can be raked out and topped with soil.
Full removal is worth it when the ground needs to be solid and clear: under a new slab, a shed pad, a pool deck or a driveway extension. It is also worth considering when the roots are already causing damage you want to stop. If you are not sure which one you need, tell us what you plan to do with the spot and we will give you a straight answer.
What a visit looks like
When we come out, we look at the size of the stump, how close it sits to the house, fences and hardscape, and how we can get our equipment to it. Gate width matters, and so do soft spots in a lawn, which are common near the bay after rain. Underground lines for water, irrigation, gas and electric should be located before any grinding starts, so we will ask about anything you know is buried nearby.
On the day of the work, we grind the stump to the depth we agreed, check for surface roots and clean up the area. You will be left with a pile of wood chips. Many people use them as mulch. If you would rather have them hauled away, tell us ahead of time. We will also point out anything we noticed that you should keep an eye on, such as another tree showing signs of decline.
