Stump Grinding in Palm Harbor, FL
We grind stumps, take down trees, clear lots and clean up after storms for homeowners across Palm Harbor.

A stump left in the yard gets in the way of the mower, sends up new shoots and slowly turns into a home for ants and fungus. We grind stumps and handle the tree work around them for Palm Harbor homes, from older ranch houses under big oaks to newer lots with palms near the pool cage. Call or send a few photos and we will tell you plainly what the job needs.
Palm Harbor yards and what grows in them
Palm Harbor sits in north Pinellas between the Gulf and Lake Tarpon, and plenty of its yards were planted a long time ago. In the older neighborhoods you see ranch and block homes with mature live oaks, laurel oaks and pines that have grown up right alongside the house. The newer subdivisions tend to have smaller lots, queen palms, and trees planted close to driveways, fences and pool cages. Both kinds of yard end up with stumps, just for different reasons.
Laurel oaks come up a lot. They grow fast, but they often decline from the inside, and when one comes down it leaves a wide stump with surface roots running across the lawn. Pines can die standing after a dry spell, a beetle attack or a lightning strike. Palms are different again. A palm stump is fibrous rather than woody, and it rots into a soft hollow that holds water and draws insects.
Most of the soil here is sand over a fairly high water table. Because of that, roots spread wide and shallow instead of going deep, so a stump's root flare can reach well past where you would expect. That same shallow layer often has irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting wire and sometimes septic or drain lines running through it, so we plan around them.
Signs a stump or tree needs attention
With a stump, look for green shoots coming up around the base, soft or crumbling wood, mushrooms, or a trail of ants or termites. A stump that is rotting next to the house or a wood fence is worth dealing with sooner. Surface roots that lift pavers, crack a walkway or make the lawn uneven are another common reason people call.
With a standing tree, the warning signs are dead limbs hanging over the roof, a new lean, cracks in the trunk, fungus growing at the base, or soil heaved up on one side after a storm. Palms that have lost most of their fronds or have a narrowing, pinched trunk near the top are often on their way out.
People often ask whether to grind a stump or remove it completely. Grinding takes the stump down below the soil line and leaves the deeper roots to rot in place. For most lawns and garden beds that is all you need. Full stump removal pulls out the root ball as well, and it makes sense if you plan to pour a slab, put in a shed or plant a new tree in the same spot. If a root belongs to a tree you want to keep, cutting it can weaken that tree, and we will tell you when a root is better left alone.
Services we offer in Palm Harbor
Here is what we do in Palm Harbor. Stump Grinding takes old stumps down below grade so you can reseed, lay sod or mulch over the spot. Stump Removal takes out the stump and its main root mass when you need the ground fully clear. Root Grinding deals with surface roots that trip people, lift pavers or get in the way of a new bed.
Tree Removal is for dead, failing or badly placed trees, including the ones crowded close to a house or pool cage. Tree Trimming covers dead wood, limbs over the roof and branches rubbing a screen enclosure. Palm Tree Removal is its own job, since palms come down differently from hardwoods and leave a fibrous stump. Lot Clearing is for overgrown lots, back corners and fence lines that have filled in with brush and small trees. Storm Cleanup covers fallen limbs, uprooted trees and the stumps left behind once the debris is gone.
What a visit looks like
Before any grinding, the buried utilities need marking. Florida's 811 service marks public lines for free, but it does not mark private lines like sprinkler pipes, lighting wire or the line out to a detached garage. If you know where those run, flag them or tell us, and we will work around them.
When we arrive, we look at the stump, the roots around it and the way in. Gate width, slopes, soft ground and anything close by, like a fence, an AC unit or a pool cage, all affect how we set up. Then we grind, check the depth and go over the area for stray roots near the surface.
Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. Some people use it to fill the hole and let it settle. Others want it gone so they can bring in topsoil and sod. Tell us which you prefer when you book. Expect the spot to sink a little over the following weeks as the chips break down.
If you are taking a tree down rather than just a stump, check Pinellas County's current rules first. Some tree removals need a permit, and it is easier to sort that out before the tree is cut than after.
Weather, timing and storm season
Summer in Palm Harbor brings heavy afternoon storms, and hurricane season runs from June through November. If a tree has dead limbs over the roof or leans toward the house, have it looked at before the season starts. Trimming or removing a weak tree on a calm day is far safer and simpler than cleaning up after it fails in the wind.
After a storm, stay clear of any limb touching a power line and call the utility first. We do not offer after-hours service, but we book storm cleanup during our regular hours and work through the yard, from fallen limbs to the stumps that are left.
How to book
You can reach us at (727) 010-0002 or info@stumpgrindingclearwater.com. We are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are closed on Sunday.
Photos help. A shot of each stump with a shoe or tool next to it for scale, plus one of the path from the street or gate, tells us most of what we need to know. Let us know about any sprinkler lines or lighting you are aware of, whether you want the grindings left or hauled, and roughly when you would like the work done. Then use Get a Stump Quote and we will follow up.
