Old stumps and overgrown trees are common in Oldsmar yards, where oaks and palms grow fast in the warm, wet climate. We grind stumps, remove trees and clear storm damage for homeowners across the city. Call or email us for a stump quote.

Trees and stumps in Oldsmar

Oldsmar sits at the top of Old Tampa Bay, and the land here is low, flat and sandy. Many yards back onto ponds, drainage channels or wooded preserve land. A lot of neighborhoods were built around existing oaks and pines. That gives the city a green, shaded feel, but it also puts large trees close to houses, pool cages, fences and driveways.

The climate is behind almost every tree problem we see. Long, wet summers keep wood damp, which helps fungi and termites move into old stumps. Sandy soil drains fast and keeps roots shallow, so oaks spread wide just under the surface instead of growing deep. When a tropical storm or a strong summer thunderstorm comes through, shallow roots under heavy canopies are where trouble starts. Palms are everywhere here too, and they behave differently from hardwoods. A dead palm does not usually sprout back, but its trunk can rot near the top and drop the head without much warning.

What a leftover stump does to your yard

A stump looks harmless, but in an Oldsmar yard it rarely stays that way. As it softens it can draw termites and wood-boring beetles closer to the house. Mushrooms and fungal growth often show up around the base after a few rainy weeks. Some hardwoods keep sending up sprouts from the roots for months, and those shoots grow quickly in this heat. A low stump hidden in St. Augustine grass is also an easy way to break a mower blade or turn an ankle.

Roots are the other half of the story. A large oak root under a paver patio or a driveway slab may already have lifted it, and the root mass stays in the way when you try to level the pavers again. If you are planning new sod, a garden bed, a shed or a pool project, the stump and its main roots usually need to come out first so the ground settles evenly.

Services available in Oldsmar

We handle the whole job, from the standing tree to the finished patch of ground.

Stump Grinding is the most common request. We grind the stump below the soil line so you can cover the spot with soil and sod. Stump Removal goes further and takes out the stump and its main root ball, which makes sense when you plan to build or plant right on that spot. Root Grinding deals with surface roots that run across a lawn, push up pavers or sit where a new walkway is going.

If the tree is still standing, Tree Removal takes it down in sections when there is a roof, screen enclosure or fence underneath. Tree Trimming covers dead wood, limbs over the roof, and branches rubbing a screen cage or hanging low over the driveway. Palm Tree Removal is its own kind of work, since palms are fibrous and heavy at the top, and we take care of both the trunk and the stump.

For bigger projects, Lot Clearing removes brush, small trees and stumps from an empty lot or an overgrown back section of a property. Storm Cleanup deals with fallen limbs, uprooted trees and split trunks so you can use your yard again. We schedule storm work during our normal hours and take jobs in the order we can safely reach them.

Trim, remove or leave it alone?

Not every tree that worries you needs to come down. If the problem is a few dead limbs, a lopsided canopy or branches over the roof, trimming is usually enough. Removal starts to make sense when the trunk is hollow or cracked, when mushrooms are growing from the base or the roots, when the tree leans more than it used to, or when a large part of the canopy has died back. For palms, a trunk that narrows sharply near the top or a crown that has gone brown and flat is worth a closer look. If a tree looks sound and only needs a trim, we will say so.

What a visit looks like

We start by looking at the job in person or from photos you send. We check the size of the stump, how close it sits to the house, fences, sprinkler heads and pool equipment, and whether our grinder fits through your gate. Before any grinding, we arrange for buried utility lines to be marked.

On the day, we set up the work area, grind the stump below grade and follow the larger surface roots if that is part of the job. Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. You can keep them as mulch, or we can rake them into the hole and tidy the area. Over the following weeks the chips settle and break down, so a low spot may need a little topsoil before you lay sod. If you have irrigation nearby, mark the heads and lines you know about so we can work around them.
