A stump left in a Tarpon Springs yard doesn't just sit there. It softens in the heat and rain, sends up sprouts and draws insects. We grind stumps, clear roots and take down trees and palms, and we tell you plainly what your yard needs before any work starts.

Trees and yards in Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs sits on the Gulf, with the Anclote River and a string of bayous running through town. Many yards near the water have sandy soil and a high water table, so roots tend to spread wide and shallow instead of going deep. That is why an old oak stump can have roots reaching well past its trunk, under a lawn, a walkway or the edge of a driveway.

The older neighborhoods near downtown and the sponge docks often have mature live oaks and laurel oaks, along with cabbage palms and queen palms. Newer streets further east usually have smaller lots, sprinkler lines across the yard and fences close to the property line. Both matter when we plan a job. Big old trees mean big root flares. Tight lots mean we have to look carefully at how a machine gets through a gate.

The climate works against a stump left in place. Warm, wet weather for most of the year breaks wood down quickly, and soft wood draws termites, carpenter ants and fungus. Laurel oaks in particular often rot from the inside as they age, which is why so many of them end up as stumps.

Common problems we see

Most calls start with something simple. A stump sits in the middle of the lawn and the mower keeps catching it. Sprouts keep coming up around an oak that was cut down years ago. A root has lifted a paver patio or cracked the edge of a driveway. A palm was taken down and the trunk was left a foot above the ground.

After a storm the problems are different. Wind and soaked ground can tip a tree over, pull up its roots, or drop heavy limbs on a roof, a fence or a pool cage. A tree that is leaning after a storm, or has a split where two trunks meet, deserves a careful look before anyone stands under it.

If you're not sure whether something is a problem, a photo of the stump or tree and a short description is usually enough for us to tell you what we think.

Services available in Tarpon Springs

We offer the same full list of services in Tarpon Springs as everywhere else we work.

Stump Grinding takes the stump down below the soil line so you can lay sod, plant or simply mow over the spot. Stump Removal goes further and pulls out the stump and main root ball, which makes sense when you plan to build, pour concrete or plant a new tree in the same place. Root Grinding follows surface roots out from the stump and grinds them down where they are lifting turf, pavers or a walkway.

Tree Removal is for trees that are dead, dying, leaning toward a house or simply in the wrong place. Tree Trimming covers dead wood, limbs hanging over a roof and branches rubbing a screen enclosure. Palm Tree Removal handles cabbage palms, queen palms and other palms, including the stump, which is fibrous and grinds differently from hardwood. Lot Clearing takes out brush, small trees and stumps across a lot before building or fencing. Storm Cleanup deals with fallen trees and limbs after bad weather, scheduled during our normal hours.

Grind, remove, or leave it alone

Grinding is the right answer for most stumps. It is faster, it disturbs less of the yard, and the roots left underground rot away slowly over time. If all you want is a flat lawn, grinding is usually enough.

Full removal is worth it when something has to go in that exact spot: a footing, a slab, a new tree. It leaves a larger hole and takes more work, so we only recommend it when grinding won't do the job.

Sometimes the honest advice is to wait or do nothing. A stump at the back edge of a wooded lot, out of the way and not sprouting, may not be worth paying to grind. A tree that just looks untidy may need trimming instead of removal. We would rather tell you that than sell you work you don't need.

What a visit looks like

We start by looking at the stump or tree and the ground around it. We check how wide the gate is, where the sprinkler heads and lines run, and whether there are fences, pool cages or garden beds close by. For grinding we may ask for underground utilities to be marked through Florida's 811 service, especially near the street or a meter.

On the day of the work we set up the grinder, protect what we can around the stump, and grind down to the depth we agreed. If you plan to lay sod or plant, tell us, and we will grind deeper. The grinding leaves a pile of wood chips and soil. We'll talk through what to do with them when we quote, since some people like to keep them for mulch and others want the spot backfilled.

For tree and palm removal we plan where each piece will fall or be lowered, keep people clear of the work area, and leave the yard tidy when we finish.
