A typical visit follows the same order every time.

Looking at the stump and the site

We check the stump's size and its surface roots. We look at what is nearby, such as fences, walls, pavers, sprinkler heads and the house. We also check how we will get the machine in. If the stump is wet or the ground is soft, we adjust where we set up.

Grinding below grade

The grinder cuts across the stump in passes and works down below ground level. Large surface roots are ground out as far as is practical. How deep we go depends on what you plan to put there. Grass needs less depth than a new tree.

Filling the hole and cleaning up

The grindings stay in the hole, and we rake and haul away the extra. Wood chips from grinding are loose and mix with soil. Packed down and topped with soil, they settle over time, so you may need to add more soil later. Stump hole fill and grindings cleanup is part of the work, not an afterthought.

Grinding a stump or pulling it out: which fits a small coastal lot

Grinding is usually the better choice here. Pulling a stump with heavy equipment leaves a large crater and can tear up turf, pavers and irrigation in a small yard. Grinding stays within the footprint of the stump. It also avoids disturbing the roots of neighbouring trees and the footings of walls and fences.

There are exceptions. If a stump sits in the way of a new foundation or pool, or if the roots are diseased and you want them gone entirely, full removal may make sense.
