Stump grinding on Town 'n' Country lots
Town 'n' Country sits in western Hillsborough County, about 12 miles northwest of downtown Tampa. Before the 1950s it was mostly natural areas and cattle farms. From 1958 to 1978, nearly 8,000 single-family homes and townhouses went up here, and the trees planted alongside them are now old. When one of them comes down, the stump stays, and so do the roots under the lawn.
A grinder cuts the stump into chips with a spinning toothed wheel, usually a few inches below the soil line. It is faster and less disruptive than digging, and it leaves the ground close to level. Here is what tends to matter on a lot in this area.
Older lots with fences and tight side yards
Many homes here were built close together, with fenced back yards and narrow side gates. Stump grinders come in different widths, so access decides which machine we bring. Before we quote, we want to know how wide the gate is and whether anything is in the way, such as a shed, a pool cage or a sprinkler head.
Creeks and soft ground
Rocky Creek and Sweetwater Creek both run through the area, and about 8.39% of the CDP is water. Lots near a creek or a low spot can stay soft after rain. A heavy grinder can rut wet turf, so we look at the ground first and may suggest waiting for a dry spell. If the stump is on a bank, tell us, because the work is done differently there.
Palms, roots and hard surfaces
Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody. They grind differently from an oak or pine stump, and the roots spread in a mat instead of one deep taproot. Across the neighbourhoods, from Bay Crest Park to Countryway, stumps often sit near a driveway, patio slab or foundation. We check where the roots run before we start, and we keep the cutting wheel clear of anything that should not be touched.
Stump and tree services available in Town 'n' Country
Most calls start with a single stump, but the work around it is often part of the same job. These are the three main services we offer here.
Stump grinding and root grinding
Our core service is Stump Grinding. That covers stump removal by grinding, root grinding along the surface, palm stump grinding, commercial stump grinding for lots and properties, and the hole fill and grindings cleanup afterwards.
Tree removal before the stump
If the tree is still standing, Tree Removal comes first. That includes dead tree removal, palm tree removal, trimming, canopy raising, storm cleanup and removal of trees close to a house. We can often grind the stump on the same visit.
Lot clearing for larger jobs
For a whole overgrown yard or vacant lot, Lot Clearing covers brush and underbrush clearing, forestry mulching, invasive tree removal and bamboo removal. Stumps left behind by the clearing can be ground as part of the work.
What a stump grinding visit looks like
There is no mystery to the visit. Here is the order it follows.
Walking the site
We look at the stump, the surrounding roots, the ground and the access route. We also ask what you plan to put there afterwards. Grass seed, a garden bed and a new fence post all call for different depths, and we adjust to match.
Grinding the stump and surface roots
The operator sweeps the cutting wheel across the stump from side to side, lowering it a little with each pass. Surface roots that would trip a mower or push up through sod are ground out as well. Larger roots that run deeper can be left in the ground, where they slowly rot.
Cleanup and the stump hole
Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips and soil in the hole. We can rake that back in and level it, or haul the grindings away if you would rather bring in clean fill and topsoil. Tell us which you prefer when you book.
