Stump Grinding in Westchase, FL
We grind stumps and clear trees and brush for Westchase homeowners, working from our base in Clearwater.

A stump left in a Westchase yard gets in the way of the mower, the sprinkler line and whatever you plan to put there next. We grind stumps below grade and take care of the tree work around them. We are based in Clearwater and drive over to Westchase for each job, since we have no office there.
Stump grinding on a Westchase lot: what the neighbourhood means for the work
Westchase is a census-designated place in northwestern Hillsborough County, about 17 miles northwest of downtown Tampa, with Pinellas County along its western edge. Its total area is 10.7 square miles, and 8.04% of that is water. Water that close to most yards matters for stump work. Ground near a pond or drainage channel is often soft, sandy and damp, and we plan how we bring the grinder in so we do not rut a lawn or crowd a bank.
The community was founded in 1991 and built out from there, so the homes here are newer than in the older parts of Pinellas and Hillsborough. That has a few consequences for stumps. Trees planted by builders and early owners are now mature, and many have been cut down after storm damage, disease or roots lifting a driveway or patio. Lots are often tidy and fenced, with irrigation lines, pavers and pool decks close to where a tree stood. Before we start, we ask where the sprinkler heads, buried lines and any pool equipment sit.
Stump grinding, tree removal and lot clearing available in Westchase
We offer three main services in Westchase. Most calls start with one of them and end up needing a second, so it helps to know how they fit together.
Stump grinding and stump removal
Stump grinding is the core of what we do. A grinder with a spinning toothed wheel chews the stump and the larger surface roots down below the soil line, leaving wood chips. It is faster and far less disruptive than digging a stump out, which tears up turf and leaves a deep hole. We also grind palm stumps, which are fibrous and behave differently from hardwood, and we handle commercial sites such as shopping-centre islands and common areas.
Tree removal, including trees close to the house
If the tree is still standing, tree removal comes first. That covers dead and storm-damaged trees, palms, and trees growing near a roof, fence or pool cage, where the cutting has to be done in controlled sections. We can also trim and raise a canopy when a full removal is not needed. Once the trunk is down, we can grind the stump in the same visit if you want it gone.
Lot clearing for overgrown areas
Lot clearing is for the other kind of job: a back corner, a vacant parcel or a stretch beside a pond bank that has filled with brush, underbrush, invasive trees or bamboo. We cut and clear the growth so you can see the ground again, and stumps left behind can be ground as part of the same job.
Palm stumps, oak roots and how deep we grind
Not every stump grinds the same way. A palm stump has no true taproot. It is a mass of soft, stringy fibre with a dense root ball, and it grinds quickly but throws a lot of material. A hardwood stump is denser, and its main roots can run well past the trunk just under the surface. We grind the stump and the thick roots near it, working to a depth that lets you replant grass or a small shrub.
Grinding depth depends on what you want next. If the spot will be lawn or a flower bed, a modest depth below grade is plenty. If you want to plant another tree in the same place, tell us, because we will take the stump lower and you will want to remove more of the chips. Roots that run far from the stump, such as one lifting a paver or cracking a walkway, are a separate question. We can grind the visible part of those roots, and we will tell you plainly when a root is better left alone because it feeds a tree you want to keep.
What a stump grinding visit involves, from first look to cleanup
We start with a look at the stump and the access to it. A gate that is too narrow, a steep bank or soft ground changes which machine we bring, so photos help when you call. Then we agree the scope: which stumps, how deep, and what you want done with the chips.
Before grinding, we mark and avoid anything buried or fragile, such as irrigation heads, cable lines and edging. We grind the stump in passes, sweeping the wheel side to side and lowering it a little each time, then work outward along the surface roots. Chips fly, so we shield windows, cars and pool enclosures where we can.
When the grinding is done, we rake the chips back into the hole and level the area. Stump hole fill and cleanup is part of the job: we can leave the chips as mulch or haul them off. Fresh chips settle over time, so a small mound is normal. Mixing in topsoil before you seed or sod works best.
